Some of us lead with the head, others with the heart. But to be a successful leader, particularly when managing change, you need to be able to operate and communicate at both levels.  

​All too often change programmes over focus on the process and systems and neglect the people issues.  But the problem is when the processes and systems are in place, it's your people that have to operate them and if they are not bought into the change, it will fail.

But has anyone ever told you how to think strategically? It's easy enough to find out what strategic thinking is, read other people's strategic thoughts and learn to use strategic models. But how do you train your mind to think strategically.

To A Man With A Hammer

You have heard the phrase,

To a man with a hammer, every problem looks like a nail. ​

Well this is how it applies to leadership. If you have just one tool (i.e. leadership style) in your tool kit, you'll default to using this even when the situation demands a different approach and the results will be sub-optimal. 

​It's kind of like trying to saw a plank of wood with a kitchen knife, or put up a shelf with a spanner. You get the picture.
